The suffering of helplessness, disappointment, loss, powerlessness and limitation, is part of the human condition. This passionate longing to surrender and suffer comes into play in masochism. On the one hand, she's a fantasized vision of what they want a woman to be - powerful, strong, dangerous, beautiful, in control, and sexual. Masochistic eroticism is fully divorced from loving a real "other". It is a way of hating without risk. It is a technique of control.
